There are 11 universities in Hamburg, the largest of which is the University of Hamburg. These are institutions of a widely varying nature, with their own orientations as regards to content, and with individual focus.

The courses offered vary with new courses, often with an international or interdisciplinary orientation, added every semester.

In addition to the classic academic qualifications of a diploma, state examination and Master's degree, the internationally more common Bachelor's and Master's degrees can now be obtained in many academic fields in Hamburg. The study programmes provided in the English language are also being constantly expanded.
