Hamburg-Mitte
The development of Hamburg began here around 1,200 years ago. In the 9th century the Saxon fortress which stood there became the Hammaburg, from which Hamburg got its name from. An estimated 5,000 people lived inside the city walls, in 1600 that numbers rose to 40,000. Since about 1880 the city lost its character as a densely populated residential and transformed into a largely uninhabited commercial and administrative centre. Today Hamburg-Mitte has a population of about 280.000 and is the heart of Hamburg. Below you will find a list of the current city districts with a link to the German website where you can gather more information.
