The Elbe
The Elbe is a Central European stream with a length of 1091.47 kilometres, which originates in the Czech Republic, flows through Germany and into the North Sea at Cuxhaven. The major German cities the Elbe runs by are Hamburg, Magdeburg and Dresden.

Hamburg places second as the largest container harbour in Europe and seventh world-wide.

The Elbe beach is found in the district Övelgönne belonging to the city district Othmarschen. To get to the beach you can take the metrobus 112 from the Altona train station to Neumühlen/Övelgönne, or you can take the ferry 62 from Landungsbrücken to Neumühlen.
By nice weather the Elbe beach is very popular for locals and tourists alike. Here one can sunbath, grill, or simply enjoy the view of the Elbe and the container harbour on the other side of the river. Along the beach a small path leads past several cafés and restaurants.
In the West of the beach one can see the “Alter Schwede” – a 217 ton heavy stone pulled out of the Elbe River. The colossus with a circumference of 19,7 meters was found during dredging work in the river in October 1999. The Beach Clubs in Hamburg also offer beach feeling with a view over the Elbe. Among them there are the Hamburger City Beach Club, Lago Bay, Hamburg del Mar and Strand Pauli.
Hiking and Cycling along the Elbe
Hiking enthusiasts can enjoy the 23 kilometre long Elbewanderweg. It leads from Wedel past the nature reserve Wittenberger Heide to Blankenese, then onwards through the beautiful Övelgönne all the way to the Landungsbrücken. There are plenty of shortcuts and parts of the way can be laid back via ferry.
A 1000 kilometre long Elbradweg (Elbe cycling path) runs along the entire river. One can experience very versatile scenery, including marshland, city, ships, ports and farmhouses.
