Since 1996, Hamburg has a special sport highlight every year: the Cyclassics. The bicycle race brings together professionals and amateurs alike. More than 20.000 hobby athletes enjoy the feeling of speed and the competition in trying to achieve a high ranking and a good time. Participants can have their bike checked by members of the Cycling Centre Hamburg staff before the race, and if a bike breaks down during the race, they also assist the cyclists at repair stations set up along the track. Amateurs can race the distances of 55, 100 and 155 km. The event which is a combination of leisure sports and professional world championship is one of the biggest sportive events in Hamburg all year. More than a hundred thousand fans watch the race in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) every year. The professional World Cup race is also very exciting to watch. Often taking place shortly after the Tour de France, allowing fans to experience their stars close up. The highlight of the track is crossing the Köhlbrandbrücke (Köhlbrandbridge) and the challenging Waseberg.
