The image of Hamburg downtown is formed by the Außenalster (Outer Alster) and the Binnenalster (Inner Alster). Since when does the Alster lake exist? Did you know that the 10th meridian is marked at the Kennedybridge? Keep on reading and you will find out much more.

The Alster has its spring in the north of Hamburg near Henstedt-Ulzburg. In Hamburg’s citycentre the Alster expands into a big lake. The water is surrounded by trees, green parks and beautiful buildings which give the cityscape a special charisma. To uphold the beautiful scenery, it is rule that all buildings around the Alster have to be white and their roofs need to be covered with copper.

Especially the Außenalster is famous amongst many people. It is a perfect area for jogging and therefore a favoured meeting place for all active people living in Hamburg. The 7.400 m long “Alsterrunde”, which is marked around the Alster, is one of the best paths in Hamburg. But also those who are not into sports will have a wonderful time at the Außenalster. All the green spaces are perfect for relaxing and barbecueing. The so called “Alsterchairs” are a special present for those who love sunbathing and reading. Around the whole Alster there are plenty of possibilities for chartering e.g. sailingboats or paddleboats.

Address: Jungfernstieg 1, 20095 Hamburg
